We all know the United States is far from uniform. Indeed that’s the underlying theme of this blog. There are lots of ways to break up the country into more understandable chunks. Recently my Uncle Ed (who is awesome) sent me a link to a blog post by Colin Woodard, the author of “American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America”. Woodard has a way to think about what divides our country, indeed all of North America, based on who settled where and under what circumstances.

The entire piece is well worth reading, and includes analysis about how hot legislative issues around violence, which we’ve dealt with too, like stand your ground and gun control, are tied up in each region’s historic attitudes.
